Resident’s story differs from village response to late payment fees

The village last year did not deposit our post-dated sewer payment checks in the amount of $235 on September 30, 2012

To the Editor:

This is another case of “covering your ass!”

The village last year did not deposit our post-dated sewer payment checks in the amount of $235 on September 30, 2012.

By October  5, when my check had still not posted I sent my husband up to find out why it had not been processed...he in turn was told they would look into it. Our check finally posted on October 11, 2012. We remember talk of forgetting them in a drawer, so were deposited late.

Upon receiving our 2013 taxes I noticed that we had been charged a $23.50 late penalty (the exact amount of penalty levied if you never paid your sewer bill)! Plus a $.71 interest charge on the $23.50 penalty. My husband went to the village and asked why the penalty....he was asked to bring in last year’s sewer bill. Which he did, they said they reversed the penalty and interest charge. Upon returning home I looked at the receipt and it showed the penalty and interest was still being charged. On his third visit the situation was finally fixed!

I maintain that if the village had deposited last years sewer bills on time....this situation would not have occurred! Keremeos citizens, read your taxes carefully, because I believe there are a lot of people being over charged because of this.
