Woman rescued by search and rescue in backcountry incident

Quad rolled down steep embankment near Okanagan Falls

Penticton and District Search and Rescue scrambled 15 members together on Monday evening to assist in a backcountry medical rescue just east of Okanagan Falls.

PENSAR search manager Randy Brown received a call from Victoria’s emergency co-ordination centre just after 5:45 p.m. on July 9 after a 911 call had reported that a 34 year old female was down a steep embankment after rolling her quad ATV. The female had undisclosed serious injuries that required immediately evacuation.

PENSAR responded with a three person helicopter team and two rescue vehicles to an area east of Okanagan Fall on the 200 Forest Service Road.

By 6:40 p.m. emergency services and the helicopter team were on scene and began the extraction after locating the female about 40 feet down a steep hillside. While rescue crews were on scene a 10 year old boy, who had also been involved in the incident, turned up at the scene and was examined. The young male had sustained a possible fracture but was not injured as seriously as the female, said Brown.

While the extraction of the injured female was taking place a medivac helicopter was dispatched to the scene. Search and rescue members turned over the injured persons to emergency services personnel who began treatments of the two individuals and then transported them to hospital by helicopter and ground transport.

Brown said the full extent of the injuries are unknown.
