Weekend wildfire in the Ashnola receives quick forestry response

Soaring temperatures on the weekend put fire danger into high rating

A one and a half hectare blaze which began in the Ashnola valley was extinguished quickly on Saturday, August 27.

An air tanker based out of Abbotsford, along with a bird dog spotting aircraft, joined forces with two initial three man attack crews to fight the fire on Saturday afternoon.  A 20 person unit crew from  Princeton were also called to the scene, which occurred near the intersection of Ewart Creek Road.

“One line of retardant was laid down to protect one side that wasn’t naturally guarded by rocky terrain,” said Kevin Skrepnek, Fire Information Officer for the Kamloops Fire District. “The fire was out by Saturday evening, but we had a crew back on Sunday to mop up and ensure that it stayed out.”

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
