Vandalism continues to be a big problem for the village of Keremeos.

A report from the public work’s department noted vandalism and mischief in parks was a real concern.

In the last year on multiple occasions rocks and pine cones were frequently stuffed in public washrooms, and irrigation sprinklers are often targeted by vandals and broken.

“Unfortunately people do these things and there is a cost associated with it,” Mayor Manfred Bauer said during the meeting.

The report also stated household garbage is often thrown into garbage containers at Pine Park.

During the summer the eaves trough over the Memorial Park community kitchen was vandalized again and had to be replaced. Cigarette butts were also shoved into brickwork at the Info Centre in an attempt to get them into the kitchen area.

Counc. Arlene Arlow wondered if cameras could be put up in parks.

Privacy concerns were raised by other members before Marg Coulson, CAO of the village said there are already several cameras in operation that are sensor activated.

“There are motion activated cameras in the parks but they can’t be focussed on everything,” she said.
