While many school districts in the Metro Vancouver/Lower Mainland area have cancelled school today due to the extreme heat, schools in SD67 are open because they do have air conditioning, said Todd Manuel, superintendent of schools.
Many of the schools in the Metro area don’t have air conditioning in their classrooms which has prompted the decision to close.
“All school district No. 67 facilities do have air conditioning, and our principals will be connecting with their teachers to ensure that student exposure to the heat is minimized,” said Manuel.
Many schools are staying indoors for recess and lunch.
Busses will continue to run today and tomorrow; however, they do not have air conditioning.
If possible, parents and guardians are encouraged to make alternate arrangements to pick up their child at the end of the day if your child is heat-sensitive, particularly if the bus ride is long, he said.
Vernon school district has cancelled buses because of the lack of air conditioning in the vehicles.
