Regional district issues safe sandbagging information

Flood Mitigation As the SImilkameen continues to rise with warmer temperatures and a huge high elevation snowpack still to melt, the regional district recently issued this bulletin on sandbagging.

Sandbagging is one of the most versatile flood fighting tools, and is a simple effective way to prevent or reduce flood water damage, when done correctly.

To make your hard work worthwhile, make sure you are building it the right way, North Dakota NDSU publishes “Sandbagging for Flood Protection”.

• U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has published a booklet on “Sandbagging Techniques”.

Sandbags are available at various locations throughout the Regional District Okanagan-Similkameen at the Naramata, Tulameen, Summerland fire halls and  Keremeos, Oliver, Osoyoos, Penticton, Princeton, Public Works Yards.

There is currently no “acute concern” of flooding in the Similkameen Valley at this time, however, it is acknowledged that the threat of flooding in the valley is very much weather dependent. A sudden heat wave could bring a lot of water down from higher elevations.
