UPDATE: Pick-up truck sideswipes semi-trailer’s cab, results in diesel spill on Highway 97

The driver of the pick up was sent to hospital with serious injuries

Update: 3:15 p.m.:

Penticton RCMP provided an update on the serious crash on Highway 97 that occurred Wednesday morning.

Initial information at the scene suggested a pick-up truck travelling south on Highway 97 crossed the double solid line colliding with an on-coming semi-trailer, said RCMP.

The pick-up truck sideswiped the semi-trailer’s cab, which included a diesel fuel tank. This resulted in the diesel spill.

The driver of the pick-up truck was taken to Kelowna General Hospital, with injuries described as serious but not life-threatening.

No criminality is believed to be involved, said police.

Penticton RCMP says the investigation is on going with support from the BC Highway Patrol.

Update: 12:50 p.m.:

Traffic is now open to a single-alternating lane past the crash site in Kaleden according to DriveBC.

The trailer that was involved in the collision was seen being loaded onto another to be transported away from the scene.

Due to the congestion DriveBC is advising travellers to be prepared for major delays.

Highway 3 between Hedley and Princeton is also closed due to flooding along the road.

Update: 9:45 a.m. :

A serious crash on Highway 97 at the scales in Kaleden will see the road closed for an extended period of time on Wednesday, said police.

According to Penticton RCMP, a southbound pickup truck and a northbound semi truck collided resulting in diesel fuel being spilled onto Highway 97.

Highway 97 will be closed in both directions for an extended period of time for completion of the police investigation and for cleaning up the diesel spill.

The crash took place at 8 a.m.

Emergency vehicles are on scene at the incident between Lakehill Road and the Okanagan Game Farm Road six kilometres south of Penticton.

There have been several crashes in this area of Highway 97 which is near the uncontrolled intersection connecting to Highway 3A which is currently the only route available for transport trucks and essential travel from the Lower Mainland.

On Tuesday, a serious T-bone crash took place at the intersection of Highway 97- Channel Parkway and Warren Avenue, closing Highway 97 for several hours.
