Composting workshops scheduled

The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen will be hosting a series of workshops this Spring to educate and encourage people to compost.

On Tuesday March 22, the RDOS will be hosting a workshop on worm composting at the RDOS office at 101 Martin Street in Penticton. Worm composting is a growing technique for composting inside apartments and homes. The workshop will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The course is free to attend with worm bins and worms available for $25. Participants are asked to pre-register. All proceeds from the workshop will be donated to the Penticton Community Garden which built all the worm bins from local recycled material.

On April 9 and 10 the RDOS will be hosting a two day intensive Master Composter I Recycler course at the RDOS office at 101 Martin Street and at the Community Garden in Penticton. Participants will receive training on composting, recycling and water-wise gardening.

The goal of the program is to empower people to promote composting and recycling in their community. To become a certified RDOS Master Composter, participants will be required to volunteer. Volunteer activities range from setting up compost displays, hosting courses on backyard composting and helping to provide composting opportunities for apartments and businesses. Everyone is welcome. Participants are asked to pre-register.

To kick off Earth Week on Saturday April 16 , the RDOS will be working with the Penticton Community Garden to host a free workshop on backyard composting. The workshop starts at 1 p.m. at the Community Garden at 480 Vancouver Ave. Everyone is invited to this free event. Learn how to backyard compost more effectively in our dry climate.

On Saturday April 30, the RDOS will be hosting a One Day Only Compost Bin Sale at the

RDDS Office at 101 Martin Street from 8:30 to 11 :30 a.m. Earth Machine compost bins will be available for $39 taxes included. Backyard compost bins remain for sale at the Campbell Mountain, Oliver, Summerland and Keremeos landfills for a limited time. The bins fit in most cars and come with a composting booklet.
