Boaters on Mara Lake asked to stay clear of rail trail near Sicamous during construction

Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail closed to the public

Boaters on Mara Lake are being asked to stay clear of the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail near Sicamous as rock scaling is underway.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) said people in the area of the trail near Sicamous may hear construction noise, including some blasting, resulting from the work being done. The trail below is currently fenced and closed to the public.

“The public needs to remember the trail is closed to everyone except authorized workers,” said the CSRD in a June 8 media release. “It is an active construction zone with hazardous work taking place.”

The CSRD is also reminding boaters to keep clear of the trail and out of the construction zone.

“Currently, the rock scaling team is nearing completion of work at the 5-kilometre mark below the Mara Hills Golf Course. After that, work will commence around the 12-kilometre mark,” said the CSRD.

The entire rail trail corridor, from Sicamous to Armstrong, has been closed since May for rock scaling, which is expected to be completed by the end of June.

“This construction work is creating additional, significant hazards along the trail,” stated rail trail partners in a May 23 media release. “Please stay off the trail for your safety and that of the work crews.”
