Thanks to 100 Men Who Care, three local non-profits received additional funding.

The Penticton Vees and the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC) were the hosts of the most recent meeting of 100 Men Who Care, a group of community-minded men who gather four times per year to pool their funds and donate to three charitable organizations. The SOEC provided the space and meals for the event and the team provided members with tickets to stay following the meeting to see the players in action against the Coquitlam Express.

At each meeting, members of 100 Men Who Care donate $100 each to form a combined donation. They ask three organizations from the region, which are randomly selected in advance, to attend and give presentations on their operations and services and how this funding could benefit them.

The members then vote to decide where the majority of the funding will be allocated. The organization with the most votes will take 80 per cent of the combined donation and the other two charities receive 10 per cent each.

At the Oct. 24 meeting, the Okanagan Boys & Girls Club received the majority of the donation, totalling $6,160, to support their community kitchen program. According to a release from 100 Men Who Care, the organization meets once a month to teach families how to shop on a budget, use coupons, read nutrition labels, prepare nutritious menus and develop cooking skills.

“The Boys & Girls Clubs provides the food, kitchen and supplies for these families to come in and prepare the meals to take home. Last year a total of 3,780 lunches were served to children and parents, 850 meals cooked and taken home for families to enjoy,” states the news release.

The other two organizations, the South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS) and the Penticton Soupateria Society each recieved $770 from the combined donation. SOWINS will put this funding towards their proposed new initiative Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS), a program to support sexual assault survivors with all necessary community supports at the same entry point.

The funding received by the Soupateria will be used to continue to provide the community with hot meals for those in need. According to the release, the centre serves 45,000 nutritious meals each year.

To date, 100 Men Who Care has donated $66,100 to 30 charitable organizations in the South Okanagan-Similkameen region. The next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 23 with the location to be announced.
