Lack of rail service halts Kaleden fruit

Shipment of fruit from the Kaleden Co-op cold storage has been held up for the past week by lack of railroad service. Some 85,000 boxes of apples are still being held in storage, including Winesap, Delicious, Newtown, Mcintosh, Sptizenberg and Sayman. Condition is remarkably good, considering that all fruit was in a riper condition than usual when received in cold storage.

Some cars have recently been shipped to France, and it is gratifying to note that this avenue of export has been again opened to the B.C. fruit. The largest volume of fruit ever handled through the local cold storage has been handled this past season. Some 180,000 boxes will have passed through the plant when all fruit has been shipped. Temperatures have been maintained remarkably well considering the heavy tonnage handled per day during the warm fall days.
