The grade five students of Similkameen Elementary- Secondary School graduated from this year’s D.A.R.E. program on Wednesday, March 16.
A number of dignitaries were on hand to lend formality to the event, including Keremeos Mayor Walter Despot, Mrs. Diana Thomas, (representing MLA John Slater) RCMP Constable Pam Scheidl and RCMP Corporal Hayden.
The D.A.R.E. program is focussed on elementary students in the hopes of delivering a strong message on misuse of drugs and alcohol prior to firsthand exposures that they may be exposed to in the students teen years.
Auxilary Constable Troyce Beglaw became an instrumental part of the program this year, when he agreed to head the D.A.R.E. program for South Similkameen. He instructed the students through a series of ten Wednesday lessons at the SESS grade five classes of Ms. Fyall and Mrs. Johnson.
A number of parents were on hand for the assembly, which included skits by the students as well as a number of testimonials from the graduates, expressing pledges to avoid substance abuse as a result of having taken the program.
