An annual Mother’s Day event is returning to the South Okanagan in 2022 to unite communities from two nations, all in the name of peace.
The 39th edition of the Mother’s Day Walk for Peace will happen on May 8 on Highway 97 at the U.S.-Canada border crossing between Osoyoos and Oroville, Wash.
Since 1983, the event has brought together peace activists from both countries in an effort to promote “friendships among all people,” organizers say.
“There are presently armed conflicts everywhere on the globe, affecting ordinary people of different nationalities, ethnicity, religion and race,” reads a press release.
“All those who are everywhere affected by the upheavals of war are the concern of the Mothers’ Day Walk for Peace.”
The Haynes Provincial Park in Osoyoos will be home to a gathering of people at 1 p.m., after a related walk from the Oroville Library and across the border commences at noon.
“Those unable to walk can go to the border and greet the walkers from both directions,” organizers added.
Agreements have been made with both U.S. and Canadian authorities ahead of the festivities, with singing, dancing and speeches at the border set to take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
On the Canadian side, border guards will direct people to the primary Walk for Peace meeting place, organizers added.
