Similkameen Sweep: Keremeos basketball teams reign atop B.C. tournaments

Local high school sees senior girls’ and boys’ teams return home as champions

The conclusion of two B.C. high school basketball tournaments last weekend ended with Keremeos on top.

Similkameen Elementary Secondary School’s senior girls’ and boys’ teams took home first-place hardware after winning each of their final games at tournaments away from home.

While the girls’ squad won their tournament north of Kamloops in Barriere, the boys powered past Merritt in the finals to win the Nicola Valley-hosted, 12-team tournament.

The Keremeos girls’ team clinched first after defeating Barriere in the finals, 39-37.

The boys’ reign atop the Merritt tournament — which also included victories against Vernon Christian and Pleasant Valley Secondary — marks the second time in as many months the team has returned home with first-place hardware.

On Dec. 9, the team captured first at the annual Barriere Cougar Classic.

In BC High School Boys Basketball’s latest rankings released Jan. 24, the Keremeos team finds itself third in the BC 1A Rankings, behind schools from Chilliwack and Langley.
