Fun Fact of the day: The Spanish flu is the worst pandemic in history

This image captured in the year 1918 depicts policemen of the city of Seattle, Washington as they don protective gauze face masks to keep themselves safe from the worldwide Spanish Flu pandemic. The pandemic, first officially recorded at the United States Army’s Camp Funston in the state of Kansas, would go on to kill upwards of 50 to 100 million people across our world. This translates to a full five percent of the human population at the time, and it also means that the flu killed more than all who died in the First World War. . . . . . The "Spanish" flu earned its name for a very simple reason: deception. To maintain national morale in the countries fighting in the Great War, wartime censors minimized the early reports of illness and deaths in places such as Imperial Germany, France, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States. But in neutral Spain, the newspapers were free to report the epidemic’s full effects without any wartime censorships. An example of this being the reporting on the grave illness of King Alfonso XIII, although he eventually recovered. These reports created a false but worldwide impression of Spain as being hit more hard by the influenza outbreak than other nations, thereby giving rise to the pandemic’s nickname: “Spanish Flu.” ________________________________________________ #worldwar1 #worldwarone #spanishflu #1918 #1910s #unitedstates #ushistory #americanhistory #germanhistory #soldiers #worldwari #worldwar1history #war #historiansunion #united_historians #history #historical #historic #warhistory #warphotography #warphotos #ww1 #wwi #combat #historybuff #historynerd #stopcensoringopposingviews #youcannotcensorhistory
