It will be a reunion two years in the making when the record-breaking 2011-2012 Penticton Vees get enshrined into the B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame this July.

Originally inducted as part of the Class of 2020, Penticton’s decade-old team has waited longer than expected to have its moment on the provincial stage, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

On July 22, however, the team who captured the 2012 Fred Page Cup while winning a record 42 games in a row, will be honoured at the South Okanagan Events Centre’s B.C. Hockey Hall of Fame.

“It’ll be hard to ever forget the 42-game winning streak,” said Fred Harbinson, head coach of the Vees since 2007.

Harbinson referenced the historic Vees team during the recent championship parade for the 2021-2022 team, who captured the Fred Page Cup on May 18 against the Nanaimo Clippers.

Much of the 2011-2012 team will be in attendance at the ceremony, says the Hall of Fame’s curator Pat Loyer.

Penticton’s squad from 10 years ago won a total of 54 games during the regular season, led by future NHL blueliners Troy Stecher and Mike Reilly, on route to their Fred Page Cup victory.

Other inductees this year include former Vancouver Canucks defenseman Mattias Ohlund, NHL official Jay Sharrers, gold-medal-winning defenseman Eric Brewer, the 2002 Kootenay Ice and the late Ray Stonehouse, a junior hockey builder.

Hall of Fame induction tickets are listed for $75 on valleyfirsttix.com.

“The induction evening at the SOEC will be held almost exclusively in the Hall of Fame, with a reception where fans can meet inductees and view the re-invigorated hall displays that honour the players, teams and the history of hockey in BC,” Loyer said.
