PHOTOS: Champions crowned in summer’s last beach volleyball tournament in Penticton

The South Okanagan’s beach volleyball league played at Skaha Lake Park beach courts

After a difficult two summers on the beach, volleyball players across the Okanagan returned to Penticton’s Skaha Lake at the end of August for the final tournament of the season.

Teams ranging from competitive to recreational level competed in the South Okanagan Volleyball Association’s year-end playoffs on Aug. 30, with players from Kelowna, Summerland and Osoyoos among those to attend.

The late-August tournament split teams into different divisions, with locals Kip Noble, Mike Tigchelaar, Chris Hernes, Vu Pham and Sydney Olexa from “Can of Whoop” finishing at the top of Division C.

Division D’s title, meanwhile, was captured by the team of Kevin Frempong, Jeremy Hepso, Sara Berthelsen, Graham Filek, Chantel Beierle and Taylor Schyrbiak from “Unblockable.”

A total of 18 teams make up both divisions, consisting of six to eight players per squad.

The co-ed adult league welcomes players from across the Okanagan, both for their outdoor and indoor competitions.

SOVA’s indoor league runs from Oct. 18 to Dec. 8, with registration set to close on Sept. 9. As of Tuesday, there are four spots available.

Second-place finishers from the Aug. 30 event, meanwhile, were also recognized before a wrap was officially put on the 2022 outdoor season.

“Flamin’ Flamingos,” led by Drake Sylvestre, Derek Lowe, Jeff Di Lorenzo, Nicole Sackvie and Alicia Serwatkewich, were crowned second-place finishers in Division C.

The “Ace Holes” placed second for Division D, thanks to the efforts of Ethan Stewner, Micah Alderliesten, Candice Greene, Dane Stevens, Dylan Gedig, Kole Boettger, Annie Babchuk, Breanne Cousins, Marissa Stocker and Allanah Napper.
