The Kobau Koyotes are winners of the under 14 girls fastball provincial title after weekend playdowns in Surrey

The Kobau Koyotes are the new U14 C girls fastball champions of B.C. They were undefeated in the weekend playdowns which took place in Surrey this past weekend.

All the girls had a fabulous season and this fulfilled their ultimate goal of winning a gold medal at the provincial level.

Game seven was definitely the Koyotes game of the entire season, beating Naniamo 8-5 after nine innings.

The game was won with a walk-off triple by the teams youngest player, Missy Vesper.

The game was tied 2-2 after five innings. No runs were scored in the sixth or seventh inning, so this put the game into International rules.

Nanaimo batted first in the eighth inning, scoring two. Then with Apps hitting a hard double, she scored Thompson and Leask, so the game was tied again.  In the ninth inning, even with Crow and Leask both catching fly balls, Nanaimo still scored one run. When Koyotes went up to bat, M. Lepage was put on second base.

C. Matzick had a great eye and walked, followed by C. Carter, also walking, now Koyotes had bases loaded.  K.Minshull singled, but M. Lepage was out at home.  Then B. Vesper flied out, giving the Koyotes two out, down by one.  S. Crow walked, scoring C. Matzick.  Then, M. Vesper walked to the plate, tripled to left field, scoring Carter, Minshull and Crow.  Players, parents and coaches all jumped up and ran out to grab Missy for winning the game. Tears, laughter and cheering was throughout the diamond.

Game eight, the final medal game was against New West, ironically, the same team the Koyotes played in their first game of the tournament.  Koyotes beat New West 9-2 in six innings after a five run explosion in the second inning.  Minshull fielded some hard hit balls at shortstop and Carter stole three bases to win the gold.

Many parents, grandparents and friends made the trip to the coast to cheer on the girls.  Facebook and texts kept many others informed over the weekend.

Thanks to all the local support for this team over the years.  All three of the Koyotes coaches, Cory Vesper, Shawn Carter and Scotty Minshull were provincial medal winners when they played boys fastball in the 80’s.
