A number of hometown athletes put themselves on the provincial map this weekend in Penticton during Swim BC’s divisional championships.

The Penticton-based KISU Swim Club hosted hundreds of swimmers from cities like Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon and Prince George from Friday to Sunday (Feb. 25 to 27) at the Penticton Community Centre Pool on 325 Power Street.

As a team, the KISU Swim Club finished in second place overall after competing against 15 other swim teams across B.C.’s Interior.

The top swimmers from the weekend’s festivities, including 22 KISU athletes, have been invited to the provincial championships in Victoria from March 10 to 13.

“I’m also very proud of how well our club did for hosting the event,” said KISU’s head coach Tina Hoeben.

“It was a lot of work coming out of almost two years of not hosting meets and they did a great job.”

Andreas Nordlund, Jakobus Solibieda, Sean Peters, Jacob McNamee, Nina McEachern, Karys King, Amy Hawkins and Hercules Gilman are among the KISU swimmers to post provincial times, booking their trip to Victoria in the process.

The Penticton-based club posted the weekend’s best score when the boys’ side defeated their Kelowna counterparts 1806-1799.

Penticton’s community pool club has hosted significant province-wide events in the past, most notably a meet in the fall of 2019 that saw hundreds of swimmers across B.C. hit the Peach City pool.

“We are very grateful for the support the City has given us,” Hoeben said about the weekend’s event.

“We couldn’t have done it without them.”

As a result of the festivities, the local pool was closed to the public over the weekend.
