Park would provide benefits

Last year I made a public presentation on the national park in Keremeos for members of the community and council members

To the Editor:

Last year I made a public presentation on the national park in Keremeos for members of the community and council members. I was especially interested in the openness and interest of the mayor and councillors who were clearly trying to consider what would be best for the Village of Keremeos.

Ernie Marvin, in his letter to the editor, has ably outlined his option for Keremeos - hunting, quadding, logging and mining in the portion of grasslands that could be set aside for a small national park.

The other option would be to preserve that area in a national park, keep it free from development or off-shore investment, and benefit from the economic, job development, educational, recreational and community economic development opportunities it offers - something that would support and enhance your lovely and unique village.

The national park would bring more people to your businesses such as the grocery store, restaurants, gas station, rodeo, fruit stands, museum, festivals and B&B’s. There would be more permanent and summer job opportunities - both in the park and village.

I believe that the mayor and councillors should be informed with correct information and continue to advocate for the best possible benefits for the village.  I encourage all citizens to support their efforts.
