Municpal candidates need to understand legislation

s

To the Editor:

Recently, there have been letters to the editor critical of the present village council which works very hard to improve the village.

In November 2011 there will be municipal government elections. Prospective candidates and the general public should be aware of the legislation which govern them. Legislation governs and restricts what municipal councils can or cannot do through the:

- Community Charter introduced in 2003.

- The Local Government Act which replaced the Municipal Act in 1996.

Hopeful candidates and the public can obtain and read copies of the village financial statement, which was presented at five public meetings which were not well attended, and the village annual report which is published at the end of June.

Prospective candidates and a general public which is informed are most likely to effect change in the community.
