Fortis rates explained

Fortis manager explains rate difference noted in previous letter to editor

To the Editor:

Re: FortisBC rates

I am writing in response to a recent letter published in the Keremeos Review regarding FortisBC’s electricity rates.

We applied last year for a 3.3 per cent increase in electricity rates for 2014 to address rising power costs and pay for the necessary investment to the electrical system.

Our regulator, the BC Utilities Commission, has not yet approved the rate increase, but has given FortisBC interim approval as of January 1, 2014. That means current residential electricity rates of 9.09 cents/kWh for the first 1,600 kWh and 13.54 cents above that reflect the 3.3 per cent increase.

If the BCUC does not approve the increase or approves a lower rate increase, customers will be credited the difference.
