Democracy is dead in Keremeos

At the latest Keremeos Irrigation District saga held July 24, the hypocrisy, manipulation and dishonesty at the table were in full display

To the Editor:

During the latest Keremeos Irrigation District saga held at Victory Hall on July 24, the hypocrisy, manipulation and dishonesty of the thugs at the head table were in full display. They shut the doors, stopping many in the village who wanted to attend the meeting, on the premise that the hall was too full even though there were many empty chairs available.

They did not have a sound system and there were dozens of complaints that the speakers could not be heard. When the crowd asked one of the speakers who he was, he refused to answer, saying that we would find out later.  When asked why the meeting was called even though the proposal was defeated earlier the answer was astounding... if you vote yes it will cost you eight dollars per year...if you vote no you will pay an extra ( $180) per year. We are building the reservoir whether you like it or not. This not only sound like extortion ... it is extortion.

The only thread of honesty I saw was when they stated that they really don’t know how much the final cost will be... scary, isn’t it. Within the next three to four years expect your water bills to increase to at least $600 per year.I agree that the reservoir might be a good thing, but the way these wanna be thugs and extortionists handled this thing was all wrong.
