Council doesn’t treat constituents fairly, says reader

Resident not satisfied with Keremeos council's decisions over bylaw issues

To the Editor:

Two Sets of Rules!

It is interesting to see a full slate of candidates running for mayor and council in the Village of Keremeos.

What is even more interesting is reading the incumbents’ statements in the Review that have more I’s than a potato.

Nevertheless, over the years I have had numerous opportunities to appear before the outgoing mayor and council to discuss concerns brought forward by my neighbours and myself. In every case, the mayor and council have interfered and ignored provincial statues and regulations, village bylaws, and staff recommendations in favour of patronization of individuals in their “Good Old Boys Club.”

I found Keremeos has two sets of rules when it comes to how the statutes and bylaws are interpreted. One set of rules for the residents and businesses in the inner circle of mayor and council, and one for the rest of us.

I also found the only consistent thing about mayor and council is their inconsistency. It is time for the residents to tell the incumbents we are tired of mayor and council meddling, and their patronizing behaviour. I for one will be asking two very important questions of incumbents vying for my vote this election; “What have you done to keep our neighborhoods healthy and safe. You attend lots of meetings and make promises; but what have you actually done?” Secondly, “Do you have business interests or business or personal relationships which will create conflicts of interest for you as a member of the village council?” It is time to tell mayor and council to respect and treat all constituents fairly without bias. It is mayor and council’s job to listen to us, make policies, and let staff do their job.

So far I like what the new candidates have said. I hope you do too, and mark your ballot appropriately.
