1941-2020 ~ Helvi Marostenmaki, 79, passed away suddenly on December 8, 2020 in Cawston, BC, just where she wanted to be, at home, still running around doing everything she wanted to do. Mom was born in Finland in 1941. She married the love of her life, Martti Marostenmaki in 1964 and they had 3 rambunctious children together.
They courageously left the old country in 1968 for a better life for their very young family in Canada. They first settled in Welland, Ontario then moved to Toronto, then to Victoria and finally in 1992 to their "retirement" home, a 5-acre ground crop, organic farm in Cawston, BC.
Mom and Dad loved their new home and Mom became very active in the community and church, working at the bargain centre and helping with the local food banks until COVID put a stop to activities.
Mom was always neighbourly, willing to help and well known for her amazing baking and cooking. She liked nothing better than feeding everyone who set foot in her house. She was always ready to help anyone who needed a helping hand and was often driving around friends, and goats and food to various people and food banks.
Sadly, their son Veli-Pertti predeceased Mom and Dad in 1993 and then Dad passed away in 2004. Mom leaves behind her daughter Johanna (husband David and son Oskar) and son Mikael (daughter Alyssa and son Jacob).
Helvi will be missed by her many friends and family, across Canada and around the world. She left the world a better place than she found it.
A memorial and internment of Helvi's ashes will be planned later this summer in Cawston, once COVID has settled down, as many friends and family will want to remember her, safely.
In lieu of flowers please consider donating to your local food bank or to the Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation.
