Summerland’s construction activity slowed in March

Number and value of building permits lower than in recent years

The municipality of Summerland issued 13 permits in March, with a value of $1,569,000.

This is fewer permits and a lower dollar value than the same month in the previous five years.

In March 2021, Summerland issued 15 building permits, with a value of $1,812,500 and in March 2019, Summerland issued 16 building permits, worth $12,741,000.

“This represents a bit of slow down in construction activity from February (15 permits at $4.45 million) but total construction value for the start of 2022 remains strong,” Brad Dollevoet, director of development services, said in a report to Summerland council.

In 2021, Summerland had its strongest year on record in terms of building permits. That year, 203 permits were issued, with a total construction value of $59,775,300. A significant of this value came from a single permit in August, for the Oasis development on Lakeshore Drive. That permit, for the construction of a three-building mixed-use residential-commercial development, had a construction value of $23,582,000.

In addition to building permits, Summerland saw an increase in planning applications, with seven new applications received in March.

So far this year, the municipality has received 17 planning applications. This figure is lower than in previous years, but Dollevoet said higher level planning applications, such as zoning and subdivisions, are keeping pace with previous years.
