A South Okanagan man was sentenced today in Supreme Court for firing his rifle into the ceiling of his Oliver apartment.
Daniel Khafizov received two years probation, as well as a lifetime firearms prohibition. He was sentenced to 18 months, however with 12 months already served he received credit for 18.

The charges stem from an incident which occurred on January 7, 2019, at Khafizov’s apartment in Oliver. Police were called to the residence to investigate a report of shots fired. According to residents of the second and third floors of the house, shots were fired from Khafizov’s bottom level apartment.
The shots travelled through the floor and a cushion of the couch in the apartment above. The shots continued upwards, eventually lodging in the third floor apartment.
While the residents were inside their apartment, no one was injured.
Police located Khafizov inside his apartment who advised police his rifle was beneath the futon. Police located a .22 calibre rifle, as well as spent shell casings, ammunition, and holes in the ceiling.
Previous appearances before Supreme Court detailed Khafizov’s history of mental health and substance abuse issues, shown in an assessment report from the Forensic Psychiatric Hospital. It was also noted Khafizov did not have a criminal record prior to this incident.
