With a wildfire burning near Apex Mountain village evacuated residents came together at Slackwater Brewing to raise $15,000 for the Apex Fire Brigade who have been working tirelessly to keep their community safe.

The fundraiser on Aug. 7 packed the brewery with people staying well into the evening to support the cause.

Local musicians also turned out to play some music. Donations were gathered at the door, and $1 from every Slackwater beer that was sold was also donated to the fire brigade.

“I grew up skiing at Apex, I got married at Apex, and our children will grow up enjoying Apex mountain each year,” said Kelsey Payton, Slackwater Brewing co-founder. “Seeing our community come together in such a short time frame was overwhelming. As soon as we put the event live on Facebook, donation offerings started pouring in from local businesses. ”

The donated items from local businesses and the money raised from them will go towards immediate supply needs for the Apex fire brigade, with any left over going towards the purchase of a wildland slip-on skid unit for the brigade’s pick-up truck.

A full-sized truck with a wildland skid unit can be staged and used for pumping, supporting sprinkler operations or direct initial attack on fires.

“The members of the Apex Fire Brigade Society and Apex Volunteer Fire Rescue would like to thank you all for the continued support throughout the Keremeos Creek Fire. Your support and appreciation always makes our job easier and more fulfilling,” said Molly Raine, a fire prevention officer with Apex Volunteer Fire & Rescue. “These have been very long days for our crew but knowing we have this incredible community to protect is what keeps us going.”

Slackwater Brewing and the Apex Fire Brigade Society also gave their thanks to all musicians who donated their talents and time, and all of the local businesses and individuals that contributed to the event.
