The Village of Keremeos may be getting its own drop-off location for empty bottles.

Encorp wants to bring a Return-It Express and Go station to the village and is applying for a temporary use permit to set up at 726 7th Avenue.

The station would be contactless, solar-powered and operate out of a converted 40-foot shipping container. Similar stations are used in other communities across B.C. including on university campuses.

These stations work by having residents sign up for an account, print out a label at the station to stick onto their clear plastic bag of bottles, enter their PIN code to access the container and drop off the bottles for Encorp to process. The proceeds from the bottles are then deposited either through eTransfer or cheque.

The station would be open from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. every day, with the container locked after hours. Internal and external security cameras and an alarm system will be installed as well.

Only a portion of the property at 726 7th Ave. would be taken up with the station, according to the plan in the permit application. A lane would split the lot and connect to 6th Avenue, and a portion of of the property would provide parking spaces.

Encorp is looking at a temporary permit for two years to trial the station before deciding whether to seek permanent rezoning.

The application has not yet gone before village council.
