The proposed construction of a seven-unit, three-storey townhouse on Penticton’s Fairview Road is headed to a public hearing on July 19.
Council voted to send the project to the next phase after being presented with a plan at its July 5 meeting that would see the east side of the road occupied with “modest densification.”
Located just south of Martin Street, the three-storey development would provide a total of nine parking spaces, with other apartment buildings and townhomes among neighbouring properties.
“The property is located along the Lake-to-Lake bike route and adding additional homes along the route help support active transportation as an alternative to driving,” city staff wrote in its report to council.
As of July 13, the city has received two letters of opposition from the public regarding the project.
Parking, traffic and congestion on Fairview Road due to the bike lane are among the concerns, according to the letters.
All seven units will feature three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a two-car garage, and a rear yard.
Meanwhile, the entrances to each unit will be at ground level, with a driveway for vehicle access located on the south side.
“We believe the project meets the intent of providing modest densification to an area of town that has a mix of townhouses and high-density apartment buildings,” the applicant wrote to the city.
Two of the nine parking spaces provided as a result of the development would be visitor spots.
Tuesday’s public hearing kicks off at 6 p.m., with council also set to hear residents weigh in on a proposed six-storey, 70-unit apartment building in the North Gateway of Penticton.
