Power will be out in Summerland for seven hours this weekend as Fortis BC continues to upgrade its transmission system and electrical substation in Summerland.

The power outage is scheduled to begin Friday, Oct. 21 at 11 p.m. and continue until Saturday, Oct. 22 at 6 a.m.

“Upgrades and maintenance to this transmission system and electrical substation are not only beneficial but essential as this is the only electrical feed to our community. Summerland Electrical Utility will also take advantage of this power outage to facilitate in-house maintenance,” said Jeremy Storvold, Summerland’s director of utilities.

The work involves the substation on Giants Head Road near Hillborn Street.

The power outage will cause interruptions to some water services and streetlights.

Storvold said planned power outages are a reminder for Summerlanders to increase their preparedness for extended power and water outages. Unplanned power outages can happen at any time and are often caused by freezing rain, sleet storms, high winds, animals and motor vehicle incidents.

During a power outage, people may be left without heating or air conditioning, lighting, hot water or even running water. They may also be left without phone or internet service. Those who do not have a battery-powered or crank radio may have no way of monitoring news broadcasts.

Residents are urged to take the time to prepare in advance. Individuals and households should be prepared to cope during a power outage for at least three days. Resources are available online at www.getprepared.gc.ca.
