Submitted The first Cawston Black Cat Club night will be held Jan. 19.

The first ever Cawston Black Cat Club night will be held Jan. 19.

The initiative led by Laurel Irons will pay homage, Cawston style, to the Black Cat cafes, bars and cabarets from Paris to New York to San Francisco from the 1920s to today, a press release stated.

“This is a legacy of diverse communities - beatniks and bohemians, lgbtq community, poets, thinkers, artists and visionaries - entertaining and being entertained. By the people for the people. In that spirit I invite you to the Cawston Black Cat Club,” Irons writes in a release.

Doors open at 7 p.m. and there will be 30 minutes for performers to signup.

Performances can range from music to poetry to plays to comedy to much more. There will be a basic tech setup. The setup is not suitable for large bands or productions.

The event is licensed and is all ages. Families are encouraged to bring young ones and all ages are encouraged to get on stage.

The event is in its growing stages, Irons states and all input is welcome.

“Think coffeehouse style. There will be a bar and there will be tea and coffee, non alcoholic beverages, and snacks available. We have the option of combining future open stage nights with an optional community potluck. It’s up to you.”

Members will decide if the Black Cat will run once a month or bi-monthly.

Membership is a token one-time payment of $1. A members’ club allows for an affordable liquor licence. Membership is required for admission.

Event admission will be by donation at the door. All donations will be given to a local cause, and a new cause will be featured at each event. Some of our first recipients will include the Cawston Hall Society, and local Indigenous-led initiatives for land and water.

A survey is available online to provide input https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/XZ6KK2C.
