The City of Penticton is looking at putting in some extra funding to develop the former Sheilings Motel site.
In 2021, the city announced a partnership with the South Okanagan Similkameen Brain Injury Society to build housing for seniors on the property following the demolition of the old cabins.
The society had worked to find housing for the tenants of the Shielings Motel when it was demolished by the city, which came after it was purchased with the plan of using a portion of the property for a roundabout at the intersection with South Main Street.
City staff is seeking to get approval for $50,000 to make the property ready for a future grant funding program to build housing on the property.
The society had applied for grant funding in 2021 as part of their agreement with the city over the property. That application was unsuccessful, and following conversations with potential funding partners, having the property shovel-ready before another application was a universal recommendation.

The city report notes that the goal is to parley the $50,000 investment into a $6 to $10 million grant-funded attainable housing development.
