Beginning today (June 3) people will be allowed to consume alcohol in some designated public spaces in Penticton such as Okanagan Beach.
The move comes as part of a new one-month pilot project approved by Penticton Council in a June 2 meeting, that will test the allowance of public consumption of alcohol from noon to 8 p.m.
If the pilot project is successful, a bylaw modification could become permanent.

However, not everyone, including the Penticton RCMP is on-board with the idea.
In a recent statement the RCMP expressed their concern over the new proposed bylaw, citing officers’ lack of ability to provide more patrols of the beach as a reason.
“The RCMP did express concern to council about our officers not being able to provide an increase in patrols of the beach. However, as always, we will make our best effort to patrol and respond to all complaints appropriately, and help make the beach safe for everyone,” said RCMP Const. James Grandy.
The bylaw was also controversial among city councillors, passing with a final a vote of 4-2.
