It was a busy morning for the Penticton Fire Department who responded to a cyclist needing assistance on the KVR Trail, after falling into a hole, and to a possible house fire.
A call first came in around 8:30 a.m. that a man that had fallen into a hole on the KVR Trail on the West Bench, between the Bartlett and Newton bridges. Firefighter Curtis Gibbons said the incident occurred on one side of the trail where it had washed out.
“The man had been in there over an hour before the person found him, all he could see was a calf sticking out when he got near the area,” said Gibbons.
Using the fire department’s Polaris Ranger XP UTV they were able to easily reach the man, who received cuts and bruises from the fall. He was quickly taken to the awaiting paramedics. Gibbons said the UTV is instrumental for situations such as this, allowing firefighters access to off-road areas.
Around 9:30 a.m. the fire department was dispatched to Jonathon Drive on the West Bench after reports of white smoke coming from a residential window.
Upon arrival to the residence, a short distance from where they were at the KVR Trail, firefighters found that the smoke was a result of a minor cooking fire in a kitchen.
