With Halloween just days away, the Penticton Fire Department is urging residents to make safety their No. 1 priority on Oct. 31.
The city issued a notice on behalf of the department on Friday, Oct. 28, reminding the public that they must follow the bylaws that are in place when it comes to fireworks.
“The use of fireworks by untrained individuals may result in unnecessary injuries,” it reads. “This Halloween, teach children that fireworks are not toys and that they’re unsafe to pick up.”
If found, children should leave fireworks on the ground and report them to an adult, it adds.
The Fire and Life Safety Bylaw requires people to obtain a permit from the Penticton Fire Department before engaging in the display of fireworks.
“For many Halloween is the most boo-tiful time of the year, with ghosts, goblins and fireworks marking All Hallow’s Eve,” the city says. “The Penticton Fire Department also wants it to be a spook-tacularly safe time of the year as well.”
