Not much happening at slide site on Highway 3 near Keremeos on Wednesday

Efforts to stabilize the mountain slope above a rock slide on Highway 3 were stymied Wednesday after inclement weather prevented geotechnical experts from getting a look at the unstable slopesabove the highway.

Two narrow windows of opportunity afforded by breaking weather weren’t enough for a helicopter to get into the slide area on Wednesday.

Telus work crews were in the area, hoping for an opportunity to repair a major fibre optics line that was severed in Monday’s slide. The line is one of two that link the whole country’s fibre optic network.

Telephone service   is still out to several residences in the vicinty of the slide area, but it is believed  all power has been restored, except for power to an irrigation pump in a neighbouring field.

Argo Road crews are reporting increasing traffic loads from sightseers trying to get a view of the slide area. Motorists who do not need to travel Highway 3 west of Keremeos are asked to avoid using the highway if not necessary.

Still no word on when the highway is expected to reopen.
