The Village of Keremeos will be heading into the new year with a public hearing on Jan. 3 for the Sunset Motel.
The owner of the property wants to have the site rezoned, and the official community plan updated to allow for four townhouses on the north-east corner of the property next to the intersection of Sparks Drive and Highway 3.
The public hearing is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Jan. 3 at the village’s council chamber.
The proposal would see the property changed from commercial to residential zoning.
The motel function of the property has not been utilized for several years, and the units on the property have been used as rentals.
If approved, the zoning change would allow for up to 27 residential units on the property, which would include the currently occupied motel units; however, as a result of the zoning change some of those units would no longer meet the requirements under residential zoning or permanent residence building code standards.
Separate from the approval of the council, the rezoning would also require approval from the ministry of transportation due to proximity to the highway, and from the school district due to the location near the Similkameen Elementary Secondary School.
