A new mural celebrating Penticton’s Ironman competition is set to be unveiled on Wednesday, ahead of the event’s 2022 return.
The design of the mural was selected by a panel of judges following a call for submissions.
The public is invited to head down to Rotary Park and the Peach where the mural, facing the Ironman’s historic swim starting location, will be unveiled at 2:30 p.m.
“Ironman Canada embodies a lot of what makes Penticton such a special place,” said Mayor John Vassilaki. “We rise to a challenge, we embrace things with enthusiasm and we always strive to do our best.
The new piece of art, entitled Movement & Motion, is a digital painting created by Jomae, a muralist duo based in the Okanagan. The competition for designs of the mural were open not only to local artists but to artists across the country.

The work features the components of Ironman, including the swim, bike, run, the training, the spirit of competition and the volunteerism that goes into the triathlon.
As the winners of the mural competition, Jomae are also set to receive $4,000 for work in capturing the spirit of the event and its history in Penticton.
From the very beginning of the swim start, all the way to the cheering finish line, the mural is a celebration of the accomplishment and perseverance of the athletes and competitors.
“With the return of Ironman, I know the entire city will feel the energy the athletes bring to the competition and that those competing will draw strength from the support of our community,” said Vassilaki. “I’d encourage everyone to get involved in this great event in any way they can, whether through volunteering or cheering loudly as these exceptional athletes compete. ”
The project was funded in part by the province of B.C.
