Neighbours ‘save the day’ when Jeep starts on fire

Damage could have been much worse if neighbours hadn’t pitched into help with Jeep fire in Keremeos

The quick actions of neighbours minimized damage after a Jeep caught fire in a driveway of a home on 2nd Avenue Friday morning.

Jordy Bosscha, the Keremeos Volunteer Fire Department fire chief, said the neighbours “saved the day.”

“There was another vehicle parked right beside, so one neighbour jumped in and moved it and the other neighbour across the way hooked a chain up to the back of the Jeep and pulled it away from the house.”

“It was very quick thinking and definitely saved of lot of property damage to the house.”

Bosshca said when firefighters arrived the Jeep was still fully engulfed in flames.

“Fortunately, the fire was in the front motor component and the back end was on fire and not near the gas tank. Gas tanks don’t explode, not like in the movies. Tires probably explode more than gas tanks,” he said.

Bosscha said because of work and other commitments only five volunteer firefighters attended the fire. Three went out on the first truck and two on the second.

“We’d definitely like more. It’s less stressful the more people you have on a call. When we have fewer people it means more multitasking,” he said.

Several new recruits have come forward and are currently doing training.

Bosscha said the department is always accepting applications for new recruits.
