A three-court outdoor sports facility in Oliver is getting some “much-needed” upgrades next week.

As part of the town’s Sport Court Development Project, the community’s racquet facilities will be expanded and have brand-new equipment installed, among other upgrades.

The project, estimated to cost a total of $140,000, is part of the approved 2022 Oliver Park and Recreation financial plan.

Upgrade work at the facility will begin on Monday, March 21.

“The desired outcome of the project is to increase available court space, improve safety, and encourage more people of all ages to be outside and active,” said Carol Sheridan, Oliver’s Park and Recreation manager.

Through sponsorship drives and donations, $40,000 has been raised by the community, according to an announcement by the town on March 18.

An approved grant application to the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative program (CHCI) also netted the project $42,567.

Work is expected to be completed in June, with the installation of new net posts and landscaping among the final items listed by the town in its development timeline.

“Oliver Parks and Recreation is asking for patience from all court users to refrain from entering the facility during this period of time to ensure safety and that the job is done well,” it reads in a statement.

The project includes the addition of four new pickleball courts and the resurfacing of the existing tennis courts.

A ribbon-cutting and recognition event is slated to take place once the development project concludes in June.
