Full-time enrolment at Penticton and Summerland schools is seeing a slight upswing after a couple years ago that saw a perplexing exodus of students in the district.
School District 67 if projecting 5,527 full time equivalent (FTE) students for the 2021/22 school year.
In February 2021, the district provided that projection to the Ministry of Education.
This was a conservative projection which took into account 165 students whose families chose to do remote learning due to the pandemic in 2020-21.
“We are seeing a positive trend of many of those students who engaged in remote learning choosing to return to in class instruction for the 2021/22 school year,” said SD67 superintendent Todd Manuel.
All in-catchment students were able to secure placement at their catchment area schools, he added.
The district is anticipating to see more than the projected 5,527 students enroll once final numbers are tallied, said Manuel.
Final enrollment numbers will be presented at the Oct. 22 board meeting.
International student enrolment is up as well this year compared to last year.
In contrast, the September 2019’s FTE was 5,711, a decline of 172 students from the previous year which the district didn’t expect. The sharp decrease in enrolment put the district into funding protection in 2020.
