Lower Similkameen Community Services Society looking for support for more affordable Keremeos housing

The LSCSS is headed to Keremeos’ council on June 6 with their request

The Lower Similkameen Community Services Society is looking beyond the upcoming Ambrosia at further affordable housing for Keremeos.

In a request to the village’s council, the LSCSS is asking for a letter of support for a new 30-unit mixed-use development.

The project would be aimed at providing housing for low to moderate-income families, seniors and persons with disabilities.

Three of the LSCSS’ housing projects are set to come online in 2022, including the delayed Quail Crossing, Cactus Court projects and the Ambrosia housing development.

Those three projects will add 67 residential units to the society’s 56 currently operated units.

The delayed projects were intended to be opened in June of 2020, but due to deficiencies from the original contractor, they were put on hold.

Mierau Contractors, the company that is building the Ambrosia development, were hired to take over and fix the accessibility and other issues in both Cactus Court and Quail Crossing.

Fundraising for the LSCSS to set up their operations in the bottom floor commercial space of Ambrosia is also nearing the finish line. The last estimate in May had over $441,000 in donations out of the $500,000 goal, including the donation of the land on which Ambrosia sits.

Those fundraising efforts will be continuing over the next year as the LSCSS deals with any future costs of getting established in their new facility.

The request had not yet been heard and voted on by council at the time of printing.
