Construction of 24 affordable housing units is moving forward.
Sarah Martin of the Lower Similkameen Community Services Society said she expects shovels to be in the ground this spring.
Currently a request for proposal is out on the project to design and build the 24 units at two different locations.
The RFP closes January 20 and from there a shortlist of candidates will be determined.
“We’re pleased with how things are proceeding,” Martin said following a Keremeos village council meeting Monday.
Martin was attending as first and second reading too place on a rezoning of the property at 816-7th Avenue, where 16 of theunits will be built. The remaining eight will be built on the same property as Mountain View Manor.
The first and second reading of the rezoning from light industrial to multi-family took place with little debate.
A public hearing will be held at a meeting in February.
The property is owned by the village and will be leased to Lower Similkameen Community Services for a term of 35 years.
The province announced in late November that the Lower Similkameen Community Services Society would receive $3.1 millionin funding for the affordable housing project. As part of the deal the society had to secure a mortgage for about $800,000 forthe project
