Garbage collection fees to remain unchanged in 2011 for Keremeos

Similkameen Country President Joan McMurray, along with Vice President Arlene Arlow, attended the Monday, February 7 regular meeting of council to request that February 21 - 25 be proclaimed “Chamber of Commerce Week” in the village.

In addressing the issue, McMurray noted that the proclamation presented and opportunity for the Chamber the Commerce to demonstrate their value to the community.

As part of the activities planned in conjunction with that week, Similkameen Country also hosted a series of lectures on topics of interest in the Lower Similkameen, scheduled to take place at Victory Hall on February 17.

Council approved the request.

Council authorized staff to proceed with the placement of a Request For Proposals with respect to bylaw enforcement services, following a recommendation of council at the January 31 Committee of the Whole meeting.

Anna McIndoe, Environmental Planner, presented to council the final presentation of the Corporate and Community Climate Action Plans.

Questions arose in council with respect to what parts of the village’s infrastructure had been designated “corporate” and which had been designated “community” the implication being that properties not under village control might have been ruled as part of the community’s carbon footprint - which would result in higher costs to the village. A number of buildings will be reviewed.

In the meantime, council carried unanimoulsy a resolution that adopted both the corporate and community climate action plans.

A motion to adopt council’s strategic priorities for 2011 also carried.

After coming before council at least two other times, the garbage and recyclable materials collection rates were approved. Council agreed to set the 2011 garbage collection fees the same as those in 2010, at $135 per household, after a rambiling discussion over garbage issues in general.
