Frauds and bicycle thefts increase in Penticton’s rural areas

Third quarter statistics from RCMP show changes in crime trends

The third quarter of 2020 saw fewer break-and-entering cases but more fraud and bicycle thefts in rural Penticton according to the RCMP.

The Penticton South Okanagan Similkameen regional detachment’s crime statistics show an increase in the number of crimes over the same period in 2019.

There were 954 calls in the third quarter of 2019 and 1,045 in the third quarter of this year.

While the number of violent crimes increased by four per cent, the number of assaults dropped by 19 per cent, from 26 incidents in 2019 to 21 incidents during the same time period this year.

Uttering threats increased by 50 per cent, from 12 in the third quarter of 2019 to 18 in the third quarter of this year.

The total number of property crimes decreased by seven per cent in Penticton’s rural areas, from 178 incidents in the third quarter of 2019 to 166 in the same period this year. However, there were some areas where statistics increased significantly.

The number of bicycle thefts rose by 70 per cent, from 10 to 17 and the number of frauds increased by 43 per cent, from 14 to 20.

Business break and enters showed a decrease of 85 per cent, from 13 incidents in the third quarter of 2019 to two incidents in the third quarter of this year.
