While work has been underway for several months, signs of Penticton’s new supportive housing project are visible on Skaha Lake Road.
The 54-unit recovery-focused facility is currently set to open in early 2023, a delay of a year past its original early 2022 planned opening.
Construction of the project is being done with modular units that are assembled off-site. The modules will then be craned into position on top of the foundations that have been set.
The new facility, Nxastwilxtn, will include recovery services, as well as access to Indigenous cultural services and programs.

The project has met with several delays, due to supply chain and labour issues.
A 4-3 vote by Penticton’s council gave approval to let BC Housing move forward with commitments they had made in a letter about the project.
B.C. Housing changed their initial proposal from a wet facility to a dry and recovery-based housing which made the difference for the councillors who voted in favour.
Those commitments were that the facility, regardless of who operates it, would be staffed 24-7, that the housing will be for those who are committed to recovery with a focus on Indigenous individuals and that programs and supports will be provided to the residents including counselling.
