Firefighters from around British Columbia participated in the 2022 Wildland Urban Interface Wildfire Training Symposium on the weekend.

The event was hosted by the Penticton Fire Department, but some of the training scenarios were held in Summerland. Six Summerland firefighters participated in preparation for the coming wildfire season.

Fire chief Rob Robinson said this annual symposium provides valuable training and experience in suppression, new wildfire mitigation tactics and integration with the BC Wildfire Service and The Office of the Fire Commissioner.

Two firefighters completed the introduction to wildland fire behaviour and danger tree assessor training and four firefighters completed the “boots on the ground” wildfire operations training. An additional two firefighters assisted the engine boss training by providing a water tender to supply water.

The engine boss training took place in a development in Summerland where homeowners volunteered to provide property access to training crews which were simulating an urban interface fire scenario.

This training symposium is a great opportunity for Summerland firefighters to explore new tools and technologies and to network with other firefighters from around the province, Robinson said.
