Platoon Captain Corey Lang said firefighters arrived on the scene to heavy smoke from the back bedroom area of a unit.
There was no one inside the home when firefighters entered the residence.
“We were able to extinguish the fire before it could really get up into the second floor,” said Lang. “The fire was contained to one unit, however, there might be smoke damage in the above units.
ALERT was called to the scene as there were at least two missing animals from the affected unit.
Due to the age of the building, multiple fire crews were called to the scene in case the blaze spread.
No one was injured in the incident and the residents of the home will be placed in the care of emergency services.
FortisBC and a hazmat team also responded to the incident.
UPDATE: 2:24 p.m.
At least one unit was badly damaged in a fire at an apartment at 880 Badke Road in Rutland, Monday.
Several other units may have been impacted by the blaze, as firefighters were seen entering more than one residence.
RCMP are on scene along with the Animal Lifeline Emergency Response Team (ALERT).
ALERT is dedicated to animal welfare through the preparation for and the actual rescue and shelter of domestic animals and livestock in a disaster.
It is believed there were several pets in the affected units that will need assistance.
Dark brown smoke can be seen coming from the bottom floor of an apartment at 880 Badke Road in Rutland at about 1:45 p.m. Monday.
Fire crews are on the scene and are attacking the flames from inside the apartment at Cedar Villa.
It’s unclear if the fire has spread to neighbouring units.
It's believed one person was home at the time of the incident and was able to evacuate safely. According to witnesses, a man was seen running toward the apartment yelling, "That’s my home, my wife, my wife."
