If you see smoke near Apex Mountain, it is likely a controlled burn.

BC Wildfire Service announced that the burn is set to start between Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, and that about 500 piles of wood debris are set to be burned as part of fuel management in the area.

The burn will continue until it is either completed, or there is significant snowfall in the region.

The smoke is expected to be visible in the surrounding area, including at Apex Mountain Resort, as well as in Hedley, Olalla and along the Highway 3 and 3A corridors.

The exact timing of the pile burning will depend on weather, site and venting conditions, and on snowfall. This pile burning will proceed only if conditions are suitable and will allow for quick smoke dissipation.

Staff from the BC Wildfire Service will carefully prepare, control and monitor these fires at all times.

Activities such as pile burning help reduce wildfire hazards by reducing the amount of fuels such as dead wood on the landscape.

Apex Mountain resort was evacuated this summer for 12 days due to the Keremeos Creek fire.
